Crafts tend to be almost as expensive as bought gifts - at least at first (most supplies can be reused later). You could try making felt softies. They require needle, thread, floss and felt. All very cheap. There are tutorials and such on the web as well.
You could also try Quilling. Though again, requires some initial investment.
Due to my own grad student poverty - my family gets my glorious presence this Christmas and that’s it. But they love me so that’s all that matters.
You might take all the snap shots you have of you and your boyfriend and some of him alone. Make a picture of them and put it in a frame. The in laws will love it.
If you are living in the country as I do you can get a small log (make sure it has a flat bottom. Get some of the evergreens that are scattered on the ground to decorate the top. Out a few small candles in the center maybe a small red bow. The only cost is the clue and the candles and the red bow.(get at the dollar store). You are talking less than 2 dollars
A good friend of mine made ornaments out of dough made with flour and water, then baked and painted. http://www.makingfriends.com/r_flstdough...
Make sure you put some care into making them!
i was in the same dilema, i found this great idea online. its easy and pretty cheap.
HOME MADE SNOW GLOBES
First you get some jars with lids. I usually save my jars so i had a few, if not you can get those “canning” jars fairly inexpensively. I used pickle jars and and cherry jars.
THEN, you can buy small village people from walmart. I got mine for a dollar a pair. they are the little figurines people use for christmas train towns.
You glue the figure to the bottom of the jar using a strong water proof glue. allow that to dry (i let mine dry over night) then put some large thick glitter, Either Clear or white, into the jar.
fill the jar with water and glue the lid closed. i painted the lids, but you could cover them with fabric. i tied a pretty bow out of some cheap ribbon i had. When you shake them up they are soo cute.
I went a little further and used some “model” paint to paint trees and snow on the inside of the jar on one side to make it almost like scenery. It took me only a few hours all together. minus the drying time of the figure over night.
it sounds like a lot but you cold spend less than $20 and have about 5 gifts.. you may even be able to stretch it further.
OR my second idea would be to go to a craft store, pick up a box of the “clear” glass ornaments. you can do something similar minus the water. OR you could get some of that “etching Cream” and etch ornimants. i did that one year and they came out great.
IF doing the etching cream, try looking for for Square glass ornimants, it makes the stenciling part easier.
Hope this helps
Well last year I had to make crafts for my family members because we were very limited..Only had enough cash to buy for our children and as you know..kids come first at Christmas..lol…Anyway..
I got a pretty large photo album and made something like a memory book for my Mom & Dad…I had old school papers from when I was a child..Old Photos..Pictures of all the kids and their kids…You can also write poems or just little sayings…They absolutely loved it..Cried the whole way thru it…And when you get tears you know you’ve done good..lol
I did something similar for my sister..I got one of the little small photo albums..They come in like a box with three small albums that slide into it..anyway…I got my recipe book down or you can collect some recipes from each member of the family (ie mom, grandmother, great grandmother, etc) And I wrote them out individually on index cards..by hand..and on the very first page wrote something like…made from the heart..and so on and so on…
They both enjoyed their “homemade” gifts and something else I did was go online and find a poem..like mothers are… or fathers are…and find a pic of you and them and put it at the center of the page and copy and paste the poem to go below it…Put it in a picture frame and wooollaaahhhh…perfect gift…
Good luck…I’m sure you’ll do great
If you don’t need to ship gifts, you might try cracked ice candles. You make them out of canning paraffin that you can buy at the grocery store. When my daughter and I made them, I went to the expense of buying candle tint. My daughter looked at it after I came home from the craft store and said, “Isn’t that a crayon?” So, after that, we used crayons (take off the wrapper) to tint the candles. This is super easy, fun, and if you live in a cold climate, you can make ice outside in large quantities (borrow ice cube trays from neighbors). Here are some web sites to check out for instructions:http://www.e-scoutcraft.com/candles/cand…http://www.sharingsustainablesolutions.o…
Here’s a fun website:http://www.brightideas.com/christmas/
It’s from the makers of yummy M&M’s. Browse and see what you could make. Also for gifts, try a Dollar Store, Buck or Two store. You can get some decent stuff in there.
Hope this helps.
Merry Christmas!
bake them something
